The Ionians (Greeks) must have come first to trade with us. We called them Yavanars. There are five direct references to Yavanars, in the poems and one in a Pathikam. The Sangam poems speak about the trade with the Yavanars in many poems. Trade with them started a few centuries before Christ and continued until the 3rd century A.D.
We sold black pepper to these foreigners and got gold coins in return. We bought wine from them. It appears that the ‘pāvai vilakku’ lamp and the ‘kuthu vilaku with an annam top’ were dsigned by Yavanars as seen in the poems.
